MOORE, Clement Clarke (1779-1863). Poems. New York: Bartlett & Welford, 1844. 8° (184 x 120mm). Half title (occasional light spotting, a few gatherings starting to detach). Contemporary boards, paper label on spine (spine almost detached, extremities a little rubbed), with a cloth dust-jacket and slipcase. Provenance: Katherine de Berkley Parsons (book-label).
FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR OF TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS on half title, "Nathl. Paulding Esq from his old & sincere friend, the author". Moore wrote A Visit from St. Nicholas, more commonly known today as Twas the Night Before Christmas, for his children in 1822. It is believed that a family friend sent the poem to the New York Sentinel under the condition that the author was to remain anonymous. It was first published on 23 December 1823 and was an immediate success. Moore did not take authorship until 1844 when the poem was included in this book of his poetry.
