'MOTHER DO NOT WEEP FOR ME'

The Mother of God supports the dead body of Christ. The cross dominates the gold, arched background, whereas the corners of the sky are occupied by the 'darkened' sun and the 'blooded' moon, according to the account of the Bible. The buildings behind refer to the city of Jerusalem. Two family saints appear on the border.
The iconography and style of this dramatic representation, the colours employed and the gold background, derive from late Byzantine art.
