Lot Essay

Munakata's home and nearly all his work and wood blocks were destroyed during the May, 1945 firebombing of Tokyo during the Pacific War. He and his family were evacuated to the verdant district of Tonami in Etchu province, now Toyama Prefecture. The museum in Fukumitsu, Toyama, has an important core of works by Munakata.
