Lot Essay

Pen landscapes by Diaz are rare: the artist's posthumous sale only lists 23 drawings in this technique (Paris, 22-24 January 1877, lots 290-312, cf. lot 291 described as Intérieur de forêt and 301-9 as Sous bois (9 croquis)). The address on the back of the drawings, 22, rue d'Amsterdam, Paris, was a hotel where Baudelaire frequently stayed.
