Lot Essay

With conflict breaking out in central Europe war became a favourite subject amongst the foremost Russian avant-garde artists. In these fourteen lithographs Goncharova portrays all facets of war past and present, creating impressive dynamic images of each subject she deals with. Amongst the finest images are the archangel Michael riding triumphant through flames on horseback and the heavenly spirits appearing amongst fighter planes engaged in combat. Goncharova's ability to handle subject, symbolism and line enables her to produce prints of startling power whilst her understanding of the mechanics of lithography enable her to produce prints of astonishing quality. There is little doubt that this is a tour de force amongst works executed between 1910 and 1925 in Russia.

Complete portfolios rarely appear. The lithographs in the present example are particularly fine impressions and the portfolio as a whole survives in very good condition.
