8vo (3¾ x 3 in). Collation: A-E8. Woodcut portrait of George II (headed "God preserve Him") laid down on front endpage, facing the title), title-page and a few other pages with borders of typographic ornaments, four pages devoted to the alphabet, each with a small woodcut illustrating brief verses; C5r with large woodcut of the execution of "Mr. John Rogers, Minister of the Gospel in London... the first Martyr in Q. Mary's Reign...1554"; last leaf E8 with an advertisement for Christopher Sower, affixed to rear pastedown (36 of 40 leaves: lacking A7, A8, E1 and E7, text block loosening, considerable fraying and marginal tears, sometimes catching a letter or two, soiling and scattered spotting). Contemporary calf (worn at corners and extremities, one corner chewed).
AN APPARENTLY UNRECORDED EDITION, similar to another Christopher Sower New England Primer (Heartman, 11; Evans 7264). That edition contains "Several Chapters and Sentences of the Holy Scriptures," while the present instead contains (D1-E7) the "Assembly's Catechism" (The Shorter Catechism, 1647). Not in Bristol, Evans, Heartman, The New England Primer; Shipton and Mooney, etc.
