Lot Essay

It is possible that this is 'View of St. Mary Redcliffe Church, near the sea banks, Bristol' which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1782, no. 504. There is an aquatint of the same subject signed with initials and dated 1803.
This watercolour shows the southern end of the harbour area with shipyards and dry-docks on the right. In the distance can be seen the church of St Mary Redcliffe and the terraced houses of Redcliffe Parade. On the left, numerous merchant vessels are moored alongside the Grove.
