Lot Essay

The unusual arrangement of this sheet gives an insight into Berchem's print making technique. The first drawing, in the direction intended for the finished etching, is folded onto the left half of the sheet and the image 'printed' by the application of pressure. This reversed image can then be transferred to the plate, which when printed returns the picture to its original conformation.
