Lot Essay

This sheet was formerly part of one of two albums of drawings by Rembrandt and artists in his circle that belonged to the Earls of Dalhousie. Perhaps acquired by George Ramsay, the 8th Earl (1739-87), they were sold to Colnaghi and then Cassirer in 1922, when the albums were broken up. Most likely early owners thought the drawings were all by Rembrandt, however now about half the sheets in the album are given to Maes. This drawing dates to about 1650-58.
We are grateful to Dr. William W. Robinson for providing us with additional information about this drawing.
