We are grateful to Mrs. Lebrun-Jouve for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs and for suggesting that the work was painted in Rome in circa 1784/5. This picture will be included in her forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's oeuvre, as no. P225. A related composition by Taunay, datable to circa 1805, is in the Musée d'Arras.
