Lot Essay

Nikolai Sergeev (1855-1919) studied under the landscape artist Lev Lagorio at the Academy of Arts, St Petersburg. In 1887 he was made a fellow of the Academy and in 1910 he became a Academician. Sergeev participated in numerous exhibitions including those of the Wanderers or Peredvizhniki. In addition, he was also a founder member of the St Petersburg Society of Artists (1890-1903).

The present lot with its rustic theme is typical of Sergeev's idyllic depictions of Russian countryside. Today, his work is represented in The State Russian Museum, St Petersburg, Tomsk Museum of Art and the V. P. Sukachev Museum of Art, Irkutsk.
