Lot Essay

The painting depicts one of the traditional marriage rites observed in Russia from the 10th - 15th Centuries. Following the church ceremony, the young bride was received in her new home where she performed the custom of removing her husband's shoes.
Nikolai Nevrev is one of the leading genre painters of the 19th Century. He is best known for his historical paintings depicting Kievan Rus'.
