Thomas François, first Prince of Carignan (1596-1656) was one of nine children of Charles-Emmanuel le grand. He was made Lieutenant- General in the French Army and led the troops in Italy. He was favoured by Mazarin who gave him the title of Grand Maître de France on the disgrace of the Prince of Condé
