Details
NOTED MISSAL, use of Rome, in Latin, DECORATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, [Spain, mid-14th century].
295 x 221mm. 263 leaves. EIGHT LARGE PENWORK PUZZLE INITIALS WITH FULL BORDERS, 10 leaves of musical notation, ALMOST EVERY PAGE WITH PENWORK INITIALS in red or blue with extensive purple or red flourishing extending into margins (lacking a bifolium between ff. 106 and 109, some warping and marginal staining, some offsetting to opening leaves, tear to f.124, lower margin of f.253 cut with no loss of text). 19th-century leather (lightly scuffed).
PROVENANCE:
1) The Missal closely follows the use of Rome. The tironian 'et', with its short curl, has a somewhat Italian flavour, but the flourishing of the initials and specific abbreviated word-forms indicate a Spanish origin. 2) Acquired from BERNARD M. ROSENTHAL, 1972 - his pencil inscriptions in upper and lower covers.
CONTENT:
Rubric for Advent, Gloria, Credo and Mass for the Visitation ff. i-iii; Temporale from Advent to Easter, with music ff.1-104; Canon and Order of the Mass ff.104-111; Temporale from the Resurrection to the 24th Sunday after Pentecost, ff.111v-160v; Sanctorale from St Andrew to St Catherine, ff.161-206; Common of Saints and a long series of votive masses, ff.206v-252v; exorcisms and blessings, ff.252v-254v; mass for St Louis f.254v; contemporary added masses, for John the Baptist and St Anthony Abbot ff.255-256v; Calendar, with major feasts in red ff.257-262v.
A HANDSOME SPANISH FOURTEENTH-CENTURY MISSAL WITH SPLENDID AND ELABORATE PENWORK DECORATION THROUGHOUT.
