OGILBY, John (1600-1676). Britannia, Volume the First: or, An Illustration of the Kingdom of England and Dominion of Wales. London: by the author, 1675.

2° (421 x 271mm). Title in red and black. Engraved double-page general map and 100 double-page strip road maps with cartouches. (Lacks frontispiece, some preliminaries, and three leaves of descriptive text, A1, Q2 and Ee1, map of 'Roads from Chelmsford' holed with minor loss, a few maps with marginal tears, last few maps and text leaves waterstained.) Contemporary panelled calf (rebacked and recornered, new endpapers).

FIRST EDITION. Although an imperfect copy, the maps, in this first survey of the roads of England and Wales, are all present and in good condition. ESTC identifies two issues of the first edition, one with 34, the other with 28 preliminary pages, omitting the dedication to Archbishop Gilbert. The present copy, containing 26 preliminaries only, conforms strictly with neither. It includes only the final page of the dedication to Archbishop Gilbert; and also lacks part of the preface. Two preliminaries signed 'B', containing 'A Table expressing first, the several roads; secondly, the plates containing those roads' etc. follow after H1-2, 'A Catalogue of the Several Roads'. Chubb C; Wing O-168.
