Lot Essay

The Right Reverand Eustace Anthony Morrogh Bernard was educated at Ampleforth College and St Edmund's College, Ware before being ordained in 1918. Between 1919 and 1937, during which period this portrait was painted, he acted as Assistant Chancellor for the Diocese of Westminster. After that he continued to rise through the ranks of the Catholic church, for instance he held the office of Vicar-General for the Archdiocese of Westminster between 1939 and 1963, and was made a Protonotary Apostolic ad instar in 1960.
