4o (273 x 198 mm). 9 folding plates on full aprons, ornamental tail-pieces. (Intermittent pale dampstaining, heaviest at beginning, not affecting plates.) Original wrappers, hand-lettered on spine, uncut (light wear to spine). Provenance: G. Rovatti (printed label pasted to title).

FIRST EDITION of the first zoological survey of the Gulf of Venice, and a landmark of Italian natural history and classification. Olivi was an abbot, student at Padua, and would likely have been one of the most important naturalists of his time had he not died at the age of 26. The plates depict crustaceans, shellfish and various types of coral. RARE: no copies of this work appear in American Book Prices Current for the past 30 years.
