The Speedmaster Professional Moonphase model was launched in 1985, using the new Lemania calibre 866 with calendar indication combined with moonphase to 12 o'clock. It was in production only in 1985 and according to the archives of the Omega Museum, a total of 1'738 examples of calibre 866 were made, out of which 1300 examples were used for the present model, reference ST 345.0809.

The same year Omega commemorated the 20th anniversary of a Speedmaster wristwatch worn by NASA's astronauts Virgil Grissom and John Young on Gemini 3 on 23 March 1965.
