Provenance
The lei was found recently in a box of memorabilia containing a portrait of Capt. Philemon Pownoll and other artefacts. It is possible that the box was acquired from his house in Sharpham, Devon, and that the objects it contained were collected by him or his grandson, Capt. John Bastard. Since Capt. Pownoll died in 1780 it is unlikely that the lei would have been collected by him but his grandson, Capt. John Bastard, was a captain in the royal Navy in the East Indies (1806-1810), which makes him a much stronger candidate.
