Lot Essay

From 1863 until 1865 Eerelman took lessons at the Antwerp academy. During the last year of this period he worked in the studio of Laurens Alma Tadema (1836-1912). Between the years 1865 and 1874 Eerelman returns to the city Groningen, but in 1874-1875, the year in which the present lot was painted, he decides to relocate to Brussels.
The present painting is reminiscent of the Belgian genre paintings by Alma Tadema and Jan Verhas (1834-1896). Eerelman however, did not set his figures in a classical environment. The young woman wearing a fine dress is depicted in homely surroundings with wonderful details in the plants and flowers.

We would like to thank Mr T. Meedendorp for his help in cataloguing this lot. -
