PAPAL BULL recording the election of Pope Leo X, [Landshut: Johann Weissenburger, 1513]. 4° (185 x 142mm.), 4 pages, large woodcut of the Papal Medici arms on title (margins slightly browned and frayed), unbound. While this unsigned edition has previously been assigned to Rome, more recent scholarship assigns it to Johann Weissenburger at Landshut. Pope Leo X was Giovanni de Medici, the second son of Lorenzo 'il Magnifico'. Born in 1475, he was created a Cardinal at the age of 13 and was elected Pope on the death of Julius II in 1513. He is best known for his patronage of arts and literature including that of Raphael and Erasmus and for his ambitious project for rebuilding St. Peter's. To finance this he permitted the preaching of an indulgence, thus provoking Luther's Reformation. He excommunicated Luther and, some months later, conferred the title of "Defender of the Faith" on Henry VIII. BM STC Italian p.494; Panzer, Annales VII 252, 66; Proctor Index 11, 776.
