Lot Essay
We are grateful to Professor Sergio Marinelli and Giorgio Marini for independently confirming the attribution on the basis of transparencies. The former considers the picture to be one of the artist's best works and has written on it in 'Da Turchi a Grammatica: Integrazioni al Seicento', Verona Illustrata, 2001 (still due for publication).
The picture relates closely to a Deposition, also on slate and of an identical format, sold, Sotheby's, London, 8 April 1981, lot 125 (£1,900), which might well have been its pendant. Two larger autograph versions of the Deposition are known in the pictures in the Museo di Castelvecchio, Verona, and another offered for sale, Sotheby's, London, 11 April 1990, lot 2.
