Lot Essay

With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with silvered dial and raised gold hour markers in 1945 and its subsequent sale on 12 June 1946.

This watch is amongst the most beautiful and best preserved examples of the successful and sought after reference 565 in stainless steel to appear in public in recent years. Its dial, finished in a highly charismatic two-tone colour scheme, combined with the very technical yet smooth case proportions, add up to a perfect look. It is impressive how the sharp edges have survived in such crisp condition over nearly 60 years of existence.

According to research, only a small series of references 565 in stainless steel with such two-tone dial are known to have appeared in public to date.

Reference 565, the first large water-resistant watch featuring a two-piece case with screw back and dust cover, was available with either subsidiary or sweep centre seconds. The timelessly modern design of reference 565 served as inspiration for the creation of the 2006 stainless steel inaugural reference 5565.
