Lot Essay

Paul Leroy worked the present figure into a number of compositions, notably a harem scene which he repeated several times on different scales (fig. 1). This technique was typical of Orientalist artists, who often drew on a virtual "library" of motifs to assemble largely imagined works which indulged Western preconceptions of exotic Eastern interiors.
