Lot Essay

The present large format composition was painted soon after Feiler had been made head of painting at the West of England College of Art in Bristol in 1963. It marks the culmination of his use of Cornish colours - light, clear blue, slate grey, bracken brown and green, with shapes circular and tombed like boulders. From this grew a formal non-objectivity with the use of pure colour and concentric circles (see T. Cross, Painting the Warmth of the Sun, Penzance, 1984, p. 169).
