Lot Essay

The present work was painted in the forest of Ecouves in Normandy, where Ranson was in the habit of spending summers at the house of his friend, Georges Lacombe. The artists often painted side-by-side and there exists a work by Lacombe, Hêtre Rouge (Private collection), of a very similar grouping of trees, quite possibly painted at the same time as the present work.

This painting will be included in the forthcoming Paul Ranson catalogue raisonné being prepared by Brigitte Ranson-Bitker.
