5 parts in one volume, 2o (522 x 388 mm). With half-title. 62 chromolithographed costume plates after Karpov, C. Huhn, N. Sauerweid, F. Teichel, Viale, Zakharov, and others, printed by Winckelmann, Berlin, Charpentier or Lemercier, Paris, and Kuhn and sons, Munich. One partly photographic plate of skulls, double-page letterpress table and colored engraved map. (Some spotting to plates and text, sometimes heavy on plate margins.) Publisher's green morocco, lettered in gilt and ruled in blind, gilt edges (broken). Provenance: Jay Gould (1836-1892), American financier (Lyndhurst bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. Dedicated to Alexander II and published to commemorate the thousand year jubilee of the Russian Empire--the founding of the dynasty of Novgorod by the three Rus princes, Rurik, Sineus and Truvor--Pauly's book is suitably magnificent in size and scope, with plates of a consistently high artistic and technical quality. The short final section covers "peuples de l'Amérique russe."
