Lot Essay

Mønsted is known for his highly finished landscapes detailing water. The clarity of light which highlights his scenes is reminiscent of the Golden Age of Dutch painting. He is considered the leading Danish landscape painter of the period. Mønsted was tutored by Julius Exner and Andries Fritz at the Academy of Copenhagen. Throughout Mønsted's long career, he circulated Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
