Lot Essay

Mönsted is known for his highly finished landscapes detailing water and the effect of light on the forest canopy. The clarity of light which highlights his scenes is reminiscent of the Golden Age of Dutch painting. He is considered the leading Danish landscape painter of the period. Mönsted was tutored by Julius Exner and Andries Fritz at the Academy of Copenhagen. Throughout Mönsted's long career, he circulated Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
