Lot Essay

Beard was seriously injured by an elephant on September 9, 1996. This work incorporates the morphine drip that was used to alleviate his pain, and x-rays that were made to establish the extent of his injuries. This x-ray image was used by Beard, in a characteristic display of insouciance, as the invitation to his 60th birthday celebrations in New York.
