'Point-to-Point races are a traditional part of the Irish sporting scene. They attract a huge local following and also a keen interest from those hoping to spot a potential equine star who will go on to greater things on the racecourse.

The Galtee Mountains in Tipperary are the backdrop to The Scarteen Point-to-Point at Kilfeacle and the mud and the rain are all part of the conditions with which the horses and riders have to contend.

Peter Curling lives in Tipperary and has focused his painting on horses and the Irish landscape. He has spent his life surrounded by horses and his paintings show his intimate knowledge of his subject. The present work combines movement and atmosphere to create a dramatic moment, and demonstrates the artist's affinity with the landscape and the close bond he has with his subjects' (private correspondence, 2006).
