Lot Essay

Painted on Peter Hurd's ranch in San Patricio, New Mexico, The Watering Hole captures the light, atmosphere and panoramic landscape of the artist's native state. Born in Roswell, New Mexico, Hurd moved east to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, after a short period at West Point Academy. In Pennsylvania, Hurd studied for a decade under N.C. Wyeth and married fellow artist and N.C. Wyeth's daughter Henriette in 1929. The two later moved permanently to San Patricio where the present work was executed.
