Lot Essay

Lanyon was born in St. Ives, Cornwall and lived there his whole life. The present composition juxtaposes the wildness of nature with man's destructive forces. The mineshaft and sea are simplified and the horizon discarded, reducing the images and exaggerating the spatial ambiguity.
