Lot Essay

A slightly larger Jiajing-marked jar of similar form, painted with dragons, phoenixes and cranes in flight amidst scrolling clouds, was sold Christie's, London, 1 December 1997, lot 98. Compare another Jiajing-marked jar, also of similar form, painted with cranes in flight amidst clouds and Daoist trigrams, formerly in the Herzman collection and now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, illustrated by S. Valenstein,
The Herzman Collection of Chinese Ceramics, New York, 1992, p. 81, no. 76.
