Lot Essay

Count Ernö Zichy was a major Hungarian landowner and an Imperial and Royal Chamberlain. His estate was at Buzinka, near Kassa (now Kosice, in Slovakia), where he owned a famous collection of porcelain. He was married twice, firstly to Baroness Ilona Lo-Presti de la Fonatana d'Angioli (1847-1901), with whom he had a daughter, Ioma, then to Etelka Steinfeld (1860-1943).

Although painted as early as 1905, the present portrait contains the hallmarks of de László's later work. The brushwork is quick and confident and captures the sitter with a speed and ease found in the hand of very few portrait painters.

We are very grateful to Dr Paul d'Orbán and The Hon. Mrs Sandra de Laszlo for their assistance in cataloguing this work, which is to be included in the catalogue raisonné of works by Philip de László (www.delaszloarchivetrust.com).
