Colour-printed lithograph after Picasso printed by Fernand Mourlot, signed in pencil 'Picasso', monochrome photographic portrait frontispiece of Picasso after Villers with his inkstamp on verso, ink-and-crayon drawing by Verdet signed and dated 'A. Verdet , 65'. Text printed on rectos only. (Some light browning to upper margins, photograph very slightly creased.) Loose as issued in original raffia boards by Verdet and Jean Chabert with black leather onlays to upper board, suede-lined wooden box (spine-bands of binding lightly rubbed). Provenance: Sarah Chauvin (inscription in green ink on preliminary blank 'Pour notre charmante ami Sarah , Chauvin -- ,mille saluts solairs , A. Verdet , 65' and signature below 'Picasso' in red crayon with red and blue underlining and blue, yellow and red radiant lines).

FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION, LIMITED TO 79 COPIES, THIS ONE OF 'QUELQUES EXEMPLAIRES HORS COMMERCE', WITH A PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION FROM VERDET ALSO SIGNED BY PICASSO AND AN ORIGINAL DRAWING BY VERDET. Following his arrest and deportation to Germany during World War II for his resistance activities, the poet Verdet settled in Saint Paul de Vence in 1948. Establishing connexions with many of the artists of the period (including Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Miró and Léger), with Picasso's encouragement he started working in the visual media in 1957, executing painting, sculptures and ceramics which were exhibited in both France and abroad. Apart from his works on Miró, Matisse and Braque, Verdet also wrote on Picasso and published books illustrated by the artist; these include La chèvre (illustrated with an etching) in 1952 and the present work.
