BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN WASH, HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE, ON BLUE PAPER, THE EDGES CUT
Known for his dramatic religious compositions and theatrical light effects, Morazzone was a favorite of Cardinal Federico Borromeo in Counter-Reformation Lombardy. Executed in the artist’s typical chiaroscuro technique, this large sheet relates to Morazzone’s Deposition in the Museo Civico of Varese, painted ca. 1618 (see M. Valsecchi, Il Seicento Lombardo. Catalogo dei dipinti e delle sculture, exhib. cat., Palazzo Reale, Milan, 1974, no. 109, ill.).

Connu pour ses compositions religieuses dramatiques, Morazzone avait gagné les faveurs du cardinal Federico Borromeo au sein de la Lombardie Réformée. Exécutée dans la technique du clair-obscur, cette grande feuille est à relier à la Déposition du Museo Civico de Varèse, peinte par Morazzone vers 1618 (voir M. Valsecchi, Il Seicento Lombardo. Catalogo dei dipinti e delle sculture, cat. exp., Palais Royal, Milan, 1974, no. 109, ill.).
