Boxiana; or Sketches of Antient and Modern Pugilism. London: Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, 1818 [advertisements at end of vol. I dated December 1819]. 2 volumes, 8°, vol. I with engraved frontispiece, additional title and 19 plates (of 20 called for by Hartley), vol. II with engraved frontispiece and 5 plates, advertisement leaves at end of both vols. (several plates in vol. II waterstained), uncut in contemproary printed and pictorial boards (spines rather worn).

Second edition of vol.I, first edition of vol. II. Sherwood, Neely and Jones went on to publish further vols. in 1821 and 1824, the latter compiled by John Bee (John Badcock). Descriptions of fights by Egan "were full of graphic action and high drama, more bloody, it was said, than the fights themselves. He was always prepared to embellish the truth in the interests of entertainment, especially where one of the subjects was Irish and so merited particular praise" (ODNB). RARE IN ORIGINAL BOARDS.
