This sculpture depicts Madame Renoir seated and nursing her first child, Pierre. Executed by Richard Guino under the direction of Renoir, Materniti was intended as a study for a large statue which was to be placed on Mme. Renoir's tomb at Essoyes. The larger version never was executed.
