Lot Essay

A study in reverse for the print of Thetis attended by Nereids engraved by Brébiette in Rome in 1625, J. Thuillier, 'Pierre Brébiette dessinateur', Hommage au dessin, Rimini, 1996, p. 283, note 43, fig. 20. Jacques Thuillier points to the probable influence of Brébiette's prints, particularly the one for which the present drawing is preparatory, on the young Poussin, who arrived in Rome in 1624. J. Thuiller, op. cit., p. 283. Brébiette went to Italy in 1617 and returned to France in 1625.
Drawings by Brébiette were sold at Christie's New York, 30 January 2001, lot 110 and Christie's London, 10 July 2001, lot 93.
