Lot Essay

The drawing is a preparatory sketch for the figures at the center of the large painting The Summer (Paris, Musée d'Orsay) executed in 1873 and exhibited at the Salon of that same year (Brown Price, op. cit., no. 197). Puvis used it again in a later painting circa 1885-7, The young mother, also in the Musée d'Orsay (op. cit., no. 323).
