Lot Essay
We are grateful to Wouter Kloek of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, who despite expressing a degree of reservation about the condition of this panel, has confirmed the attribution to Aertsen and suggested a date of circa 1550-55. He has pointed out that Last Judgements of this type were usually painted for city halls and courts and that the prominent position in the picture held by Saint John the Baptist may offer a clue as to which town this was painted for.
