Pieter Cramer (d.1780) and Caspar Stoll (d.1795)

De uitlandsche Kapellen voorkomende in de drie Waereld-deelen... Papillons exotiques des trois parties du monde l'Asie, l'Afrique et l'Amerique Amsterdam and Utrecht: S.J. Baalde & Barthelemy Wild, [1775]-1779 [Supplement: Amsterdam: Nicolaas Gravius, [1787]-1791]. 4 volumes in 3 (including Supplement), 4° (292 x 228mm). 4pp. subscribers' list in vol.I, one hand-coloured engraved additional title only (of 2), hand-coloured engraved section title, 442 hand-coloured engraved plates after Gerrit Wartenaar Lambertz. (Lacking text to vols.I-IV and 1 engraved additional title, most plates shaved with loss of numbering, some light worming.) Modern calf.

A complete set of the plates, illustrating over 1650 different species. The first four volumes were issued in 34 parts between 1775 and 1779. Cramer died shortly before the issue of the 8th part and the work was taken over by Stoll. They relied on a large number of collectors in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Haarlem to supply the specimens and each plate generally included both the upper and lower views of the more interesting specimens. The supplement deviated slightly from the working method of the earlier volumes in that it includes 22 plates that concentrate largely on the caterpillar and pupal stages of various specimens. Sold as a collection of plates, not subject to return. BM(NH) I, p.398; Landwehr 53; Nissen ZBI 985. (3)
