Lot Essay

Jan Jacob van Royen was the brother of Anna Catharina van Royen (1736-1783) who was the wife of Johan Hendrik de Vlieger (1724-1806) and whom are the sitters portrayed in Lot 548.
It has been suggested that the lady might be the grandmother of Jan Jacob van Royen, Anna Maria Meinertzhagen (?1689-?1770) who would most likely fit the age of the sitter. However alternatively, it has also been suggested that the sitter might be Jan Jacob's mother, Maria Jacoba Meinertzhagen (1712-1787), Anna Maria's daughter and the wife of Cornelis Jan van Royen (1711-1774).
