Lot Essay

The composition depicting the festival of S. Pietro relates to Canaletto's painting on loan to the Staatliche Museen Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin (see W.G. Constable, Canaletto, Oxford, 1976, II, no. 359). The variations to the boats and figures align with an etching by Giambattista Brustolon (1712-1796; see D. Succi et al., Da Carlevarijs ai Tiepolo: Incisori veneti e fruilani del Settecento, exh. cat., Venice, 1983, no. 55).
