PIROGOV, Nikolai Ivanovich (1810-1881). Anatome Topographica Sectionibus per Corpus Humanum congelatum triplici directione ductis illustrata. St. Petersburg: 1852-1853-[1859].
4 volumes of Atlas only, 2° (532 x 354mm). Printed titles to vols.II & III only (repeated in vols.I & IV), 224 lithographic plates including 8 double-page by S. Martinov and others after Pirogov lithographed by Paul Petit, 12 folding. (Some leaves spotted, 1 plate in vol.I loose, a few with small tears without loss, some trimmed touching caption and occasionally illustration.) Contemporary half roan (rubbed, spines worn, spine to vol.III detached).
VERY RARE SUITE OF PLATES being the first important anatomical atlas based on frozen sections. 'Pirogov's work on topographical anatomy ... laid a firm foundation for that field as a special area of science having great practical significance for surgery ... by dissecting frozen cadavres and removing organs from them. Both these simple methods opened previously unknown possibilities for precisely determining the forms and positions of organs and tissues ... Pirogov is considered a founder of contemporary surgery and topographical anatomy, and I.P. Pavlov credited him with placing surgery on a scientific basis (DSB). The explanatory text was published in St. Petersburg in 1851-54. Garrison & Morton 416. (4)
