Provenance: Henry W. Poor (bookplate), with 4 photogravures captioned and signed by him: portrait, January 12 1904; his house at 1 Lexington Avenue, Gramercy Park (subsequently Lathrop Harper's); the library, West and East --Edward Laurence and Carrie Estelle Doheny (1875-1958). bookplates, 1988 Christie's NY sale, Part IV, lot 1536.

A brilliantly illustrated account of American bookbindings, one of the earliest monographs on the subject, by the author of Historical Essay on the Art of Bookbinding (1883). The sale of Poor's library, which was extremely rich, took place in 1908 at the Anderson Auction Company. This is THE COLLECTOR'S OWN COPY of Pène de Bois' study, NO. 2 OF 3 COPIES ON VELLUM. The total edition size was 238 copies, signed by Poor below the limitation statement.
