Lot Essay

Although the most of the 4156 lots in the collection consisted primarily of natural history specimens, its most prominent lots were: Lot 4155, the Barberini (or "Portland") Vase which sold to "D. of Portland" for #1029 (Horace Walpole was present at the sale and bought the preceding lot--the head of Jupiter Serapis, which was also from the Barberini cabinet); and Lot 2951, the Bedford Missal which sold to Humphries for #213.3 (on behalf of James Edwards).
