Duleep Singh (1838-93) was forced to resign his sovereignty as Maharajah of Lahore following the British annexation of the Punjab in 1849. He handed over the Koh-i Noor diamond to Queen Victoria as part of the terms of the conclusion of the Second Anglo-Sikh War. He converted to christianity and was sent into exile in England in 1854 where his beauty and charm made a favourable impression on the queen. His desire to return to India and re-embrace Sikhism was thwarted and he died in Paris at the age of 55.
