Lot Essay
This compelling portrait is widely admired, but it has long resisted identification. The sitter remains unknown and the painting has been variously attributed, without much conviction, to Antoine Watteau, Jean-Franois de Troy, and Giambattista Tiepolo. Although it bears certain similarities to the style of de Troy, it is possible that the portrait is by an unidentified Italian artist.
